The New Mayor Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Maiden Speech

During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
