Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these medications need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
