A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A bill presented on Monday would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
This sector were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
